The Esk Belle

The 20-minute trip out of the harbour on this or one of the other tourist boats is well worth for the views of the town. This was taken on one of the warmest February days for many years.

Wintry Whitby landmarks

Another contribution from Mal, a former colleague, showing two of Whitby's most famous landmarks viewed across snow-covered fields.

Snowy River Esk

Just out of Whitby, the River Esk enhances this wintry view of the farmland. The railway line which hugs the bend is almost invisible.

Twice framed

The inviting Sanders Yard (formerly the Shepherd's Purse) café and restaurant on Church Street. There are two seating choices: cosy sofas and armchairs in one room, tables and chairs in the other.

Whitby swing bridge

Just along from yesterday's snow-covered boat is Whitby's swing bridge over the River Esk. The outer harbour and North Sea are to the left, the inner harbour and marina to the right. The tower of St Mary's church, reached by the famous 199 steps, is visible against the beautiful blue sky.

Snow boat to China?

Yes, the ever-popular Whitby abbey. The cliffs and sea are behind the photographer and the town is to the right.

The inns and outs

Two popular pubs, the Board and the Duke of York, in morning shadows at the bottom of the 199 steps leading to St Mary's church and Whitby abbey. Both have fine views over the harbour to west Whitby and the passing boat traffic can be enjoyed from outside in warmer months.

More marina

Another view over Whitby Marina on the River Esk taken from The Ropery on the east side of the town. Whitby town centre is five minutes walk to the right.

Another view from a terrace above Blackburn's Yard, off Church Street. The clock belongs to Whitby's old town hall. Non-native speakers might be interested in the title, which is, or used to be, slang for Look at this!

Galatea

Just a few hundred yards from yesterday's picture, the lighthouse itself with what is now a holiday cottage alongside. The brochure reassures potential visitors by informing them that there is no functioning foghorn on site. For more photos of the site and of the interior, click on the title. Galatea, she who is milky white, is the classical name chosen by Trinity House for the cottage.
